Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: By the Numbers,
- bmeltzer

I would give Luke Richardson 22 and give Rick Tocchet 92 just to fit in more names. Coburn took over number 5 for me a while ago now. Today he is the longest running Flyer. Being big, strong and good at what he does, he fits the Flyers mold. I'm a little surprised Talbot and Hartnell seem more deserving of wearing a letter then Coburn. Gagne for me is number 12 because it's the time I grew up in. Colin Forbes was wearing 12 around the time I started watching the Flyers play. Number 6 to me is Chris Therrien because of longevity. I saw Giroux wear 56 in his first training camp. Something about first line centers to me who wear out of the ordinary numbers like 88, 97, 48 or 40 is appealing to me. I always thought to myself "What if Giroux kept wearing 56?"

Tocchet's best years as a Flyer, by far, were in his first stint where he we wore number 22. If I did give 92 to Tocchet, I think Mike Knuble would be my number 22 over Richardson.

Rick Tocchet is a Flyers legend, I'm just looking for ways to get more names on the list. For whatever reason, I forgot about Knuble and I'm more of a Richardson fan.

I have a top five list. Not every player can bring it every night, so I ask ask are the top five best Flyers you've seen play live. Collect you thoughts and think of who impressed you everytime you saw them play live and in person.

1. Simon Gagne, seven times and he brought it everytime
2. Peter Forsberg, twice
3. Mike Richards, Seven, he was always a factor simply by determination
4. Chris Pronger, once
5. John LeClair, twice. Scored the first and lone goal at my very first game.

I've seen many Flyers greats but there was always something special about these guys. I've seen Darcy Tucker go for a big hit on John LeClair and all LeClair did was stick out his hip before impact, stayed strong on his skates and Tucker was the one who got the worst end of it. It was like Superman being hit by a bullet. Then during a commercial break I see Primeau and LeClair talking. Primeau made LeClair look so small.

If memory serves me correct, when Justin Williams was a rookie he wore #63 or #64 in the preseason, unless i'm confusing him with Hubacek... I hate getting old
